PARTNER

Edward P. Gothard

I was fortunate to have been taught, by the example of my parents, the importance of being of service to those who cannot advocate for themselves. As far back as my years at East Jefferson High School, my goal was to be an attorney who represented victims – of personal injury, of medical malpractice, of unfair corporate practices, of unfair employment practices, of child neglect. For over thirty years, it has been my passion and privilege to have protected the rights of hundreds of individual clients.

In my early career, I worked with one of the largest and most pre-eminent plaintiff firms in New Orleans, and then later a small casualty defense firm. I eventually formed my own litigation firm, and in 1997 merged merged my practice to form Nowalsky & Gothard. My partner is Leon Nowalsky, whom I have known for years as one of the most ethical and diligent attorneys in our area.

My firm represents individual clients, people from every walk of life and from every area of our great city. Each client’s case is handled with respect, with personal care, and personal attention.

I was fortunate to have been taught, by the example of both of my parents, the importance of being of service to those who cannot advocate for themselves. As far back as my high school years at East Jefferson High in Metairie, my goal was to be an attorney who represented victims – of personal injury, of medical malpractice, of unfair employment practices, of child neglect. For over thirty years, it has been my passion and privilege to have protected the rights of hundreds of individual clients.

My firm represents individual clients, people from every walk of life and from every area of our great city. Each client’s case is handled with respect, with personal care, and personal attention.

I do not handle class action or group litigation, and I do not advertise on television. We represent individuals, one case at a time.

Our primary source of new business is referrals from satisfied clients. I am also called upon by other attorneys to work with them as lead counsel on complicated medical malpractice cases. In the past 33 years I have tried personal injury cases in state and federal courts, primarily in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes, and have obtained multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for my clients. I have also handled complex commercial litigation, including telecommunications litigation throughout the country.

In 2003 I was honored by the New Orleans Pro Bono Project for Distinguished Service for my representation of abused and neglected children before the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court. I also received the Louisiana State Bar Association “Pro Bono Publico Award” in 2004 for outstanding pro bono service to Louisiana’s indigent.

I have written and lectured to other attorneys, mostly regarding trial advocacy, personal injury law and medical malpractice. For over thirty years, in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, I have held an “AV” rating, representing the highest ethical and professional standards of practice, based upon the collective opinion of attorneys in the Louisiana Bar Association.

While law is my passion, life must have balance. I spend as much time as possible with my wife, our three children, and two grandchildren. We love to fish and hike, and of course are avid Saints, Pelicans, and LSU fans. If you come to Oktoberfest in New Orleans, I will be the trumpet player and singer in the band.
